The document cited examples as to why the women’s tournament budget is less than the men’s, saying the biggest difference in the championship budgets is the location of women’s tournament first- and second-round games results in “savings that come from reduced expenses.” Women’s first- and second-round games are played on campus and hosted by the higher-seeded team, while men’s first- and second-round games are played at neutral sites. The men’s basketball tournament paid for nearly every other NCAA championship across all divisions except for baseball, men’s ice hockey, men’s lacrosse and men’s wrestling, which generate more revenue than expense and help cover other championship costs. The NCAA said that the total net income for the men’s basketball tournament was $864.6 million in 2018-19, while the women’s basketball tournament lost $2.8 million - the most of any NCAA championship.
In the document, the NCAA said the difference in the budgets was closer to $7.1 million because the women’s budget is closer to $21.6 million. The Division I men’s basketball championship budget for 2018-19 was $28 million, while the women’s basketball championship budget was $14.5 million. The document showed a difference not just in money spent on the tournaments, but the net income brought in by the men’s compared to the women’s in the 2018-19 season. The disparity between the Division I men’s and women’s basketball championships was highlighted in a document provided to multiple media outlets by the NCAA on Friday.
